Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) is planning for a new large-scale project in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. One of the highlights will be a 53-storey main tower – which has a three-storey podium and a public rooftop viewing platform – reaching a height of 320 m above the principal datum. Upon completion, the building will become the second tallest commercial landmark in Kowloon after the International Commerce Centre (ICC).

\n\n

“This project will be the first large-scale commercial landmark that Mong Kok has seen in recent years,” said Robert Chan, executive director of SHKP. “Applying its expertise in building transit-oriented developments, SHKP will provide quality commercial space, enrich the community with well-thought-out amenities, green elements, and enhance overall connectivity and accessibility.”

\n\n

According to the developer, preliminary works are currently underway for the project. Its planning application has recently been approved by the Hong Kong’s Town Planning Board.

\n\n

The project will have a total gross floor area of 1.52 mil sq ft, comprising a 200,000-sq-ft shopping mall and 1.2 mil sq ft of commercial space. Other amenities will include five community facilities with a total floor area of 50,000 sq ft and over 100,000 sq ft of outdoor public space.

\n\n

Dubbed the ‘Green Heart’ of Mong Kok, the project will incorporate many green, sustainable elements. A notable feature is the preservation of three banyan trees which are more than 60 years old. A ‘Ficus Plaza’, which is over 34,000 sq ft, will also be launched at the project’s ground-level entrance.

\n\n

The developer further aims to plant over 50 trees in the project to achieve 30% in greenery coverage and 1,250 kg in annual carbon dioxide absorption. This, together with the other green measures, should create a ‘Cool Island Effect’ that will reduce the temperature of the vicinity.

\n\n

Embracing the design concept of ‘Urban Cool Ribbon’, the project will also come with two landscaped walkways leading to the MTR Mong Kok East Station and a footbridge to Hak Po Street, linking the project with various streets in the neighbourhood.

One Za’abeel, an iconic landmark in Dubai developed by ICD (Investment Corporation of Dubai), has achieved the Guinness World Records title for the ‘Longest Cantilevered Building’ in the world with its panoramic sky concourse, The Link.

\n\n

The Link stretches 230 m in length, dissecting One Za’abeel’s skyscrapers 100 m above the ground, while its record-breaking cantilever extends 67.277 m beyond the development’s main tower. A feat of engineering, construction and assembly of The Link was completed in two phases over a total of 16 days without disruption to the four lanes of live traffic below the operation.

\n\n

Phase one of The Link installation marked one of the heaviest lifts in the region, where the steel structure weighing over 8,500 t was lifted into place within 12 days. More than 110 special jacks and heavy-duty strand jacks were used, calling for a concerted effort by a team of global experts in the fields of construction, engineering and contracting. Phase two saw the 900+ t cantilevered structure lifted into place within four days.

\n\n

“We are glad to see The Link honoured as an engineering and architectural marvel and look forward to welcoming visitors to experience this luxurious, record-breaking skybridge for themselves,” said Issam Galadari, director of One Za’abeel Holdings.

Samsung C&T’s Engineering and Construction Group has secured a contract to build a large-scale development in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

\n\n

The new Fubon Aozihdi Development Project, commissioned by Fubon Life, an insurance company headquartered in Taipei, will feature three sections: a 48-storey (240 m) office building, a 23-storey hotel, and a podium connecting the two buildings below the 13th floor.

\n\n

The contract has been awarded to Samsung C&T in a joint venture with a local construction company. The project is worth a total of US$790 million, of which Samsung C&T’s stake is about US$592 million.

\n\n

This large-scale development, covering a total floor area of 557,000 sq m, is expected to include a shopping mall and an aquarium. When completed, it will become a new landmark in Kaohsiung.

\n\n

Samsung C&T has been actively present in Taiwan for many years. The company is currently engaged in a project to build the third terminal at Taoyuan International Airport, located west of Taipei. The work involves constructing a passenger terminal and concourse that can accommodate up to 45 million passengers per year.
